ALBUM OF THE WEEK: May 8-14
Upon special request, this week’s album is Demon Hunter’s latest album Outlive, which was released earlier this year. For those of you who think, “Awe man, Christian metal bands suck!” yes, they typically do, but hear this one out. Demon Hunter can actually kick ass. (But if you are allergic to Christian-rock chord progression, stay away from track seven: “One Step Behind.)
Let’s start with the first single released from this album: “Died in my Sleep.” This is such a cool song because of the smooth contrast between the driving versus to the rather mesmerizing chorus that belts, “Died, Died in my sleep, ooohh, How can this be!?” It’s catchy and powerful.
The first three songs of this album is just damn good song-writing. “Trying Times” is definitely the arena song in this album. “Jesus Wept” is a much more brutal song than one might think from the title. And “Cold Winter Sun” is another song that easily gets drilled in and stuck in your head.
Fast forward to “The End,” track nine. This is a song that just keeps the punches coming. Then the chorus comes in. It’s a soaring melody, but still a wall of noise.
The last song starts with a string ensemble. Immediately there is a melodic death metal feel, but the vocals tone it down just a notch to the sound that Demon Hunter is usually known for. Again, a very powerful and sound-wall song. This band knows how to put together a track, I must admit.
Give the album a go! I know I’ll be listening to more Demon Hunter in the future.
