JARED DINES

"THE LIGHT"

&

"THE DARK"

2016

This week’s album is a little untraditional in the sense that this album is created by a YouTuber. Metal commentary and comedian Jared Dines released two EPs in the last year: The Light and Dark EP. While they are separate, I like to listen to the EPs all together. The Dark EP was released first, so I would recommend listening to it before The Light EP.

Each EP has five songs. The Dark EP’s track list is “Afraid to Die,” “Demegorgon,” “The Clown,” “The Psycho,” and “Death Sentence.” The Light EP: “Rebuild,” “Gaze into the Iris,” “Across the Earth,” “Grigori,” and “11 days.”

The Dark EP has a lot more screaming than The Light, which makes sense in a compositional and conceptual way. The Dark EP is probably my favorite of the two, though. I personally love Dines’ screams, so the more the merrier in my opinion.

This being said, this doesn’t mean his clean singing isn’t good. A favorite from the Light EP is “Rebuild,” where his singing soars with the melody. It’s still punchy, catchy and brutal.

Jared Dines isn’t just known for his wide array of singing capabilities; guitar playing is one of his main musical focuses. Fans of his YouTube channel have been able to watch him grow as a guitarist and improve over time. While The Dark EP has a lot of amazing chops, the majority of his guitar soloing is in The Light EP.

I recommend giving these EPs a listen. It’s well written, well produced and…it djents.
